Twelve

   12 Months               12 Hikes               12 Photos

Twelve Hikes is one women’s 12 month project hiking and photographing a new trail each month. This website is the map of that 12 month journey.

Every year in the cold, cloudy days of January I start dreaming up new adventures for the year.  Almost always it centers on some kind of outdoor recreation like camping, kayaking, hiking or horseback riding.  This year hiking has come forward to be my objective.

The Movie WILD came out in December 2014. Based on the true life story of Cheryl Stray, it follows a women on her solo hike on the Pacific Coast Trail, starting on the Mexican border and going all the way to the Canadian border.  I watched the movie and was inspired.

I’m not a real hiker, I’m more of a wander in the woods type of gal. Doing a 2,500+ mile hike was probably not going to happen for me. Despite this I loved the idea of hiking outside of my comfort zone and doing something that would challenge me both physically, mentally and artistically.

The concept of Twelve came to me to in the middle of the night. When I woke the next morning it was clear what my project for the year would be. Twelve months, Twelve new hikes, Twelve photo albums.

.

Twelve Months – Because once or twice is not a challenge, committing to a full year is.  Hiking only when it’s warm and sunny is not a challenge, hiking regardless of the weather or season is.

Twelve Hikes - I have always loved walking in the woods and being in nature has always been my go to escape when I’m stressed or burnt out.  I always feel better after a long hike and I love exploring new trails but life seems to get in the way of me doing it as often as I would like. Looking for a new adventure this year I decided to challenge myself to hike a new trail each month. A new trail means a trail I’ve never hiked before, something new and unknown, this will take me outside of my comfort zone and add more adventure to my life. My plan is to start with local, shorter trails and work my way up to a backpacking trip in the Porcupine Mountains in this fall.

12 Photo albums – I’ve recently taken up nature photography as another form of artistic expression so naturally I will use this opportunity to further develop my skills. I will be photographing each hike for a blog, documenting the beauty and unique features I find along the way.

This is an online diary of my experiences, it’s my thoughts and memories quickly written without much sensor or editing. I would like to be clear upfront that I am not a writer, if you’re expecting elegance and proper grammar then you might want to stop right here or you will be sadly disappointed.  If you can get past that then Welcome! and thanks for following me on this adventrue!
